11 Days South Africa Family Adventure itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Cape Town and Collect Your Keys

Upon arrival in Cape Town, you will be met by a Nextgen Safaris representative and you’ll collect the keys to your hire car. Your self-drive journey will begin with a short drive to your waterfront accommodation. During the afternoon, you may wish to summit Table Mountain in a rotating cable car or visit Robben Island and the District Six Museum to learn about South Africa’s history and Nelson Mandela’s legacy. *Optional accommodation upgrades are available for an extra cost.

Day 2: Explore Cape Town

Today you have a free day to enjoy South Africa’s gem, Cape Town. You may wish to see ‘the real South Africa’ on a walking or cycling tour of Langa Township, spend the day at one of the Atlantic Seaboard beaches or say hello to the African penguins at Boulders Beach.

Day 3: Cape Town to Hermanus

Today you’ll leave Cape Town and head south to Hermanus where you’ll spend the next three nights. Here your family can join the whale watching excursions or an ocean safari where you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the playful Cape fur seals, African penguins and other marine life. Alternatively, you may prefer to participate in adventure activities such as mountain biking, forest treks and zip-lining. *Optional accommodation upgrades are available for an extra cost.

Day 4-5: Activities in Hermanus

You’ll have another two days to explore Hermanus and the surrounding area and enjoy the activities and excursions on offer here. From July-October southern right whales can be seen along the coast of Hermanus as they migrate from Antarctica to mate and rest in the Western Cape’s waters. If you’re visiting Hermanus between July-October, we can include a whale watching trip in your itinerary. Please ask your Wayfairer Travel Consultant about this and its extra pricing.

Day 6: Hermanus to Platternberg (Garden Route)

After breakfast, you’ll leave Hermanus and drive through stunning vineyards and mountainous landscapes to Mossel Bay on the coast. We recommend that you stop for lunch in Mossel Bay and then continue your drive on to Plettenberg Bay on South Africa’s stunning Garden Route. You’ll spend the next two nights at an exclusive boutique hotel on the banks of the Bitou River, 7km outside of Plettenberg Bay. *Optional accommodation upgrades are available for an extra cost.

Day 7 Plettenberg Bay (Garden Route)

Today is a free day to explore Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding area. You can enjoy activities such as hiking, cycling and horse riding in the surrounding mountains and forests, or join a guided kayaking trip from Central Beach to the seal colony in the Robberg Nature Reserve. Alternatively, you may wish to visit the Birds of Eden, the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary, Monkeyland or the nearby elephant sanctuary.

Day 8: Plettenberg Bay to Kwandwe Game Reserve

Today you’ll leave Plettenberg Bay and drive for approximately 4 hours along a stunning coastal road to Kwandwe Private Game Reserve. A guide will meet you at the entrance of the reserve and you’ll transfer from your rental vehicle to the lodge’s 4×4 Land Cruiser. You will stay is at Kwandwe Ecca Lodge which is a family friendly, luxury property, with accommodation in 9 rooms and providing a very good range of safari activities. The lodge is perfect for families as it’s non-malarial and child-friendly. *Optional accommodation upgrades are available for an extra cost.

Day 9-10: On Safari

Today you’ll have two more game drives where you’ll have the opportunity to spot large numbers of giraffes, elephants, lions, leopards, rhinos and other wildlife. Your family may wish to participate in fun activities including a scavenger hunt. Whilst on your game drives you’ll follow a map and clues which have been strategically placed around the reserve and you’ll collect various items which will then be used in an activity e.g. making fire with sticks, art activities etc. You can also do a treasure hunt (this is also incorporated during a game drive and requires navigation skills as you’ll be using a sun-compass and major landscape features in order to find the treasure hidden around the reserve). On the second day of your safari, you’ll have another full day to explore Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, including two game drives. In between game drives, you can join a guided bush walk or you can simply relax by the pool.

Day 11: International Return Flight

On the last day of your South Africa Family Adventure tour, you’ll have the morning to enjoy your surroundings and beautiful accommodation. Following your breakfast, you will pick up your car and drive for one hour to Port Elizabeth from where you will fly home via Johannesburg or Cape Town.

GENERAL INFORMATION 10 DAYS SOUTH AFRICA SAFARI
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
All visitors to South Africa must have a valid passport with at least 4 consecutive blanks pages.  Any applicable visa and/or relevant documentation are the responsibility of the traveller.  For further information on Visa requirements visitors are advised to contact their nearest South African Embassy or Consulate.
LANGUAGE:English
TIME: GMT +3
VOLTAGE: 220 Volts/AC50Hz. Sockets are UK style, 3 pin square plugs. Power is from the government in the city/major towns and generator with inverter back up in the Safari Lodges and Camps.
CURRENCY: Foreign currency must be changed at the Bank, Bureau de Change, and Hotel/Safari lodge/Camp/Resort.   Major Credit Cards, Master card, Visa, American Express, are usually accepted throughout the country.  Where credit cards are accepted, the payment will normally be recorded in US$ regardless of the card’s default currency.
CLOTHING: Dress is mainly informal and should be comfortable as well as practical. Something warm should be brought along for early morning and evenings. Safari clothes are available from hotels/lodges/camps.
BAGGAGE: Where possible, travel light. Baggage space on safari is limited to medium suitcase or soft bag per person plus reasonable amount of hand luggage. There is 15 Kilogram per person limit on all flights to the wildlife sanctuaries. Excess luggage must be stored in your arrival hotel.
WATER: You will find many different of opinion of what is safe and what is not. We recommend for peace of mind, to drink local Bottled Mineral water. It is important to drink plenty of water especially during the hotter months. We would recommend that guests drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day to limit the effects of dehydration.
HEALTH; East Africa is a safe and secure destination; however, it is a good idea to take a few precautions.  Kindly consult your GP or local doctor at least 6 weeks before you travel, with regards: Malaria prophylactics. East Africa is a known malaria area and preventive measures are essential. You are advised to take one of the recommended anti-malarial drugs.  Be sure to wear long sleeved shorts and trousers after sunset and spray the exposed parts of your body with a mosquito repellent spray Remember to protect yourself from direct sun rays with sunscreen cream or safari hat.
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: For those guests with specific dietary requirement, please ensure we are notified prior to travel
GRATUITIES: As a guideline and dependent on how happy you are, we would suggest the following: The General Hotel/Lodge/Camp Staff – Approximately U$ 10.00 per person per day Driver Guides – Approximately US$ 15.00 to US$ 20.00 per person per day.
PHOTOGRAPHY: Please be careful when photographing public buildings, airports, bridges, the national flag and people in uniform.  Ensure that you have sought permission before photographing local people and their villages.  If in doubt, please check with your guide.
