6 Days Birding Safari Rwanda, Rwanda is a small East African country known for its stunning natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and unique cultural heritage. One of the most exciting experiences for nature lovers and birdwatchers is a birding safari in Rwanda. This safari typically covers two main areas: Kigali, the capital city, and Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of the largest montane rainforests in Central Africa.
Arrival for 6 Days Birding Safari Rwanda
You’ll be collected from the airport. Accommodation before the tour starts can be arranged for an extra cost.
Day 1: Kigali
The arrival of your air transfer, at the Kigali International Airport. Meet & greet by Akagera Aviation. They will assist you with fast-track customs and immigration clearance (visa processing).
Once done, you will pick up your luggage from the conveyer belt and proceed to the exit. Our representative will be waiting outside to warmly welcome you. Transfer to your hotel. Check-in assistance. Dinner will follow. Overnight stay.

Day 2: Kigali ( city tour)
07h30: Breakfast at the hotel and check out. 08h30: Proceed on a guided city tour that will include visits to the historical Rwanda art museum, the Kigali Genocide memorial, and the Choose Kigali arts gallery.
Highlight; The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a well-known landmark in the city of Kigali, Rwanda. It is a powerful tribute to the victims of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and provides historical context for the events leading up to it.
The memorial is surrounded by beautiful rose gardens and fountains and features exhibits and displays that tell the story of the genocide and other genocides around the world. The displays include photographs and personal belongings of the victims, making the realities of the atrocities tangible and impactful. Lunch will be at Pilipili Restaurant. This afternoon you will visit umusambi bird sanctuary for a guided tour. Later, drive back to the hotel for the evening. Dinner will follow at 19h00 and an early night as you will set off for Nyungwe early.

Day 3: Kigali-Nyungwe ( 7h30 drive)
Early morning check out. 05h30- Departure from Kigali to Nyungwe National Park. This is a biodiverse area covering over 1000 square kilometers in southwestern Rwanda. It is home to over 1000 plant species, 13 primate species, and over 300 bird species. The park is known for its lush montane rainforest and is an important conservation area, home to several endangered species.
09h00 – Breakfast stop at Stanford Restaurant. 10h00- Continue journey towards Nyungwe National Park
13h00 – Arrive at Uwinka headquarters. Lunch will be at the park canteen. 14h00: Briefing on Colobus Monkeys tour that will then start at 15h00. Colobus Monkeys are a species of Old World monkeys found in Africa. The Colobus Monkey Trek is a unique opportunity to observe these beautiful primates in their natural habitat and learn about their important role in the ecosystem of Nyungwe National Park.
17h00 – Proceed to Nyungwe Top Hill View Hotel.
19:00 – Check-in, dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 4: Nyungwe ( Birding & canopy)
On this day, carry breakfast boxes and proceed to the park headquarters in Uwinka to arrive by 06h00. Briefing by the wardens then start your guided bird watching at 07h00. With over 300 species of birds, including several rare and endemic species, Nyungwe is a haven for bird enthusiasts. Visitors can take guided bird walks through the forest, where they may spot species such as the Albertine Rift endemic birds, the Red-collared Babbler, and the Grauer’s Swamp Warbler.
Once done, you will head to the park restaurant for rest and lunch. Briefing for the canopy walk will be done by the wardens at 12h00. Your guided walk will start at 13h00. The canopy walkway activity in Nyungwe National Park is a thrilling experience that allows visitors to walk across a suspension bridge high above the forest canopy. The walkway is made up of three bridges, with the longest one stretching over 90 meters. Once done by 15h00, transfer to your hotel for the evening. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Nyungwe ( Birding & tea plantation)
On this day, carry breakfast boxes and proceed to the park headquarters in Uwinka to arrive by 06h00. Briefing by the wardens then start your guided bird watching at 07h00. Some of the bird species found in Nyungwe National Park include the Albertine Rift endemics like the Rwenzori Turaco, Handsome Francolin, Red-faced woodland Warbler, and the Grauer’s Rush Warbler. Other notable species include the Blue-headed Sunbird, Purple-breasted Sunbird, African green pigeon, Kivu ground thrush, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater, and the Great blue turaco.
Once done return to the hotel for lunch and some rest. At 15h00, visit the nearby Gisakura tea plantation.
This estate is among the most famous of Rwanda’s tea plantations and is certainly the most spectacular. Rwanda’s tea is among the best tea in the world. Here you will learn how tea is harvested, washed, and dried and how it gets to our cups.
Once done, drive back to the hotel for the evening. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6: Kigali
06h30: Breakfast at the hotel, then check out. Set off for Kigali. En route, we will visit the Ethnographic Museum in Huye. The Museum boasts of one of Africa’s best ethnographic collections. Built-in 1987, it features seven galleries showcasing historical, ethnographic, artistic, and archaeological artifacts. Visual aids provide a rich insight into Rwandan culture for visitors.
12h30: Lunch will follow at Standford restaurant. Proceed to the King’s palace museum.
The Palace is a thatched dwelling shaped like a beehive, reconstructed to resemble a traditional royal residence. It is located in Nyanza, the historical center of Rwanda, where power struggles and battles once took place according to oral tradition. At the back of the palace, visitors can see long-horned Inyambo cattle, descendants of the king’s herd, being carefully tended to and sung to by their keepers, preserving a unique tradition.
Set off for Kigali. Arrive in the evening at your designated hotel.
