11 Days Malawi and Zambia Safari Overview

On this 11 Days Malawi and Zambia Safari, you will journey across some of the region’s best wildlife areas. From the forested thickets of Majete Wildlife Reserve to the open plains and famous river safaris of Liwonde National Park to what is famously known across the border, as the valley of the leopard—South Luangwa National Park. Your overnight stay will be in some of Malawi’s favorite forests and birding locations between a truly warm-hearted safari.

Day 1: Welcome to Malawi

Today you will arrive in Blantyre and meet your guide. You will head across to Leslie Lodge to unwind and relax. Your guide will be briefing you this afternoon/ evening on your tour and confirming a program for your day tomorrow. Your overnight stay will be spent at Leslie Lodge on dinner, bed and breakfast. Your guide will be staying close by in Blantyre and is available if you’d like to explore Blantyre in the evening or go out to dinner at your own cost.

Day 2: Blantyre to Majete Wildlife Reserve

You will have a leisurely start to your morning today and enjoy breakfast. Your guide will meet you in the morning and you can head into Blantyre to explore the area. Blantyre has a fascinating history with well-preserved colonial-style buildings and a thriving market. You will take a slow drive down to Majete and arrive in time for lunch at Thawale Lodge. Should you like to explore more of Blantyre, your guide can stop at a cafe or restaurant in town for lunch at your cost.

You will arrive in Thawale and unwind. If you arrive in time for an afternoon activity, you will head out with Thawale Lodge to explore Majete Wildlife Reserve. Activities included in your stay are seasonal walking safaris, game drives, and seasonal boat safaris. You will have an overnight stay here including all your meals, activities, game park entrance fees, and levies.

Day 3: Exploring Majete Wildlife Reserve

You will enjoy a full day in Majete Wildlife Reserve with Thawale Lodge including all your meals, activities, game park entrance fees, and levies. You will have two activities today; one early in the morning and one in the evening to explore the area. You will enjoy the afternoon relaxing in the lodge and watching the animals drink in the nearby waterhole.

Day 4: Majete to Zomba Plateau

After breakfast, you will take a gentle drive back up through Blantyre and on to Zomba. There’s incredible history en route as you head to the quaint town at the bottom of Zomba Plateau. You will stop off at the market, monument, or museum or head up the mountain to explore the dam. Zomba has an incredible array of birdlife and walking trails. You will enjoy a picnic lunch as you explore and then head to Zomba Forest Lodge mid-afternoon to unwind. There are a variety of walking trails from Zomba Forest Lodge to enjoy the area.

Your guide will be staying close by and you can arrange a guided walk this afternoon or in the morning. Your overnight stay will be at Zomba Forest Lodge including dinner and breakfast.

Day 5: Zomba to Liwonde National Park

You will have a slow start to this morning and have time to walk around the area with or without your guide. After breakfast, you will drive northwards to Liwonde National Park. You will enjoy a picnic lunch en route and arrive at the Mvuu pick-up point mid-afternoon to meet your boat. Your guide will wave you off as you head across the river to Mvuu camp and will stay close by should you need him.

You will spend the night at Mvuu including all your meals, activities, and game park entrance fees and levies. Activities include seasonal walking safaris, boat safaris, and game drives. Your guide with Mvuu will go over a program with you for your stay to explore Liwonde.

Day 6: Exploring Liwonde National Park

You will enjoy Liwonde with Mvuu Camp exploring the area. You will spend the night here including all your meals, game park entrance fees, levies, and activities. There will be two activities available today, one in the morning and one in the evening to explore the area. You will spend the rest of the day relaxing in camp. Take advantage of the swimming pool!

Day 7: Liwonde to Dzalanyama Forest

You will head back across the river to meet your Land & Lake guide and say goodbye to Liwonde National Park as you make your way across the country, through Lilongwe. You will be stopping off at the Land & Lake Café for lunch and then off to Dzalanyama Forest Reserve. This is Land & Lake’s own haven in the forest. You will enjoy your night here including all your meals, and bike hire. There’s a variety of walking and hiking trails to explore the area. Dzalanyama has little wildlife left but Land and Lake’s work in the area will hopefully revive what was once a thriving wildlife hub just 60km outside of Lilongwe.

Day 8: South Luangwa National Park

After breakfast, you and your guide will head out from the forest and towards the Zambian border. Here, your guide will go through the border crossing procedures. You’ll need to pay for any visas that may be required and then continue into Zambia and on to South Luangwa National Park. Just past Chipata, you will enjoy a picnic lunch on the roadside and then arrive at Flatdogs mid-late afternoon to unwind.

You don’t have an activity booked for tonight, but wildlife is prolific along the banks of the Luangwa River. Your Land & Lake guide will say farewell to you tonight and leave you in the very capable hands of the Flatdogs team. You will enjoy exploring Luangwa with your lodge with two game drives per full day, all your meals, and game park fees included.

Day 9-10: Explore South Luangwa National Park

You will enjoy a full day with Flatdogs Camp exploring South Luangwa National Park. You will spend the night here including all your activities, meals, and game park entrance fees and levies. You can relax during the heat of the day. Back at camp, there is a swimming pool and sprawling views of the Luangwa River, and the park beyond!

Day 11: End of Tour

Flatdogs will take you across to the airport today in time for your flight down to Lusaka and back home. You will enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out. It’s about an hour to the airport and Flatdogs will coordinate this with you. Thank you for joining us! End of services.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON A MALAWI AND ZAMBIA SAFARI
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All visitors to Malawi and Zambia must have a valid passport with at least 4 consecutive blanks pages.  Any applicable visa and/or relevant documentation are the responsibility of the traveller.  For further information on Visa requirements visitors are advised to contact their nearest Malawi and Zambia Embassy or Consulate.

TIME: GMT +3
 
VOLTAGE: 220 Volts/AC50Hz. Sockets are UK style, 3 pin square plugs. Power is from the government in the city/major towns and generator with inverter back up in the Safari Lodges and Camps.
 
CURRENCY: Foreign currency must be changed at the Bank, Bureau de Change, and Hotel/Safari lodge/Camp/Resort.   Major Credit Cards, Master card, Visa, American Express, are usually accepted throughout the country.  Where credit cards are accepted, the payment will normally be recorded in US$ regardless of the card’s default currency.
 
CLOTHING: Dress is mainly informal and should be comfortable as well as practical. Something warm should be brought along for early morning and evenings. Safari clothes are available from hotels/lodges/camps.
 
BAGGAGE: Where possible, travel light. Baggage space on safari is limited to medium suitcase or soft bag per person plus reasonable amount of hand luggage. There is 15 Kilogram per person limit on all flights to the wildlife sanctuaries. Excess luggage must be stored in your arrival hotel.
 
WATER: You will find many different of opinion of what is safe and what is not. We recommend for peace of mind, to drink local Bottled Mineral water. It is important to drink plenty of water especially during the hotter months. We would recommend that guests drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day to limit the effects of dehydration.
 
HEALTH; East Africa is a safe and secure destination; however, it is a good idea to take a few precautions.  Kindly consult your GP or local doctor at least 6 weeks before you travel, with regards: Malaria prophylactics. East Africa is a known malaria area and preventive measures are essential. You are advised to take one of the recommended anti-malarial drugs.  Be sure to wear long sleeved shorts and trousers after sunset and spray the exposed parts of your body with a mosquito repellent spray Remember to protect yourself from direct sun rays with sunscreen cream or safari hat.
 
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: For those guests with specific dietary requirement, please ensure we are notified prior to travel
 
GRATUITIES: As a guideline and dependent on how happy you are, we would suggest the following: The General Hotel/Lodge/Camp Staff – Approximately U$ 10.00 per person per day Driver Guides – Approximately US$ 15.00 to US$ 20.00 per person per day.
 
PHOTOGRAPHY: Please be careful when photographing public buildings, airports, bridges, the national flag and people in uniform.  Ensure that you have sought permission before photographing local people and their villages.  If in doubt, please check with your guide.
