This 12 Days Malawi Adventure itinerary gives you a feel of the warm heart of Africa as it takes you from safaris to a taste of the colonial era before heading out to the UNESCO Heritage Site, Lake Malawi! It is the perfect destination for those seeking leisure while connecting with the local people and learning about the different cultural diversification of just one nation. On this 12 Days Malawi Adventure , you will visit Majete Wildlife Reserve, Satemwa Tea Estates, Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi.

12 Days Malawi Adventure

Day 1-2: Majete Wildlife Reserve

Welcome to Malawi! On arrival at Chileka International Airport, you will be met by a Crafted Africa guide who will welcome and transfer you to Mkulumadzi where you will spend 2 nights. It is situated within Majete Wildlife Reserve, one of the outstanding conservation success stories of African conservation. Surrounded by 7,000 hectares of private concession, Mkulumadzi enjoys an idyllic location at the confluence of 2 rivers shaded by giant leadwood trees. It is the perfect combination of splendid isolation and first-class facilities. Undiscovered by tourists, Majete is a true wilderness where every trip into the bush with a team of experienced guides will feel like an adventure.

Day 3-4: Satemwa Tea Estate

Today you go on your last activity in Majete Wildlife Reserve before being jetted off to the stunning Satemwa Tea Estates. You will be transferred to the wonderful Huntingdon House for the next 2 nights. Go for guided walks around the estates, play croquet on the lawn, take a tour of the coffee factory and do some tea tasting. Don’t forget to take a trip up to the picnic spot for sundowners for a bird’s-eye view of the estate and far beyond. You can even take a day trip to Mount Mulanje and do some hiking before heading back to the house to enjoy a home-cooked meal and a tea or coffee-related cocktail by the fire in the drawing room.

Day 5-6: Liwonde National Park

Today, you will be transferred to the Shire River where you will be met by the Kuthengo Camp staff and transferred via boat to your accommodation for the next 2 nights. You will settle into your room on arrival and rest. In the afternoon, you will be taken on your first game drive to explore the wildlife of Liwonde National Park.

After your activity, you will return to the camp in time to freshen up before enjoying an al fresco dinner and campfire stories. Wake up bright and early the next morning for your activity – you can choose from game drives, walking safaris or boating safaris! After your activity, hop in the swimming pool or do some birding on your private deck before lunch. After lunch, why not have a siesta or read a book by the pool before your evening activity? A game drive, dinner and a good night’s sleep lay ahead.

Day 7-8: Lake Malawi National Park

Off to the lake, we go! Today, you will be transferred to Kayak Africa Cottage in Cape Maclear where you will meet your boat transfer and set off for Mumbo Island. Settle into your basic but gorgeous lake-view chalet at Mumbo Island Lodge and take a dip in the warm waters of Lake Malawi. Take advantage of all the exciting water-based activities like snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking or a sunset cruise.

You can also set off on foot into the depths of this uninhabited island and explore the natural wonders within. Embark on one of the many nature trails and discover hidden beaches, caves and exquisite birdlife before settling in for a sundowner gin and tonic on the famous “pod rock” viewpoint.

Day 9-11: Lake Malawi National Park

Today, you will be transferred by boat back to the mainland to meet your guide. He will then transfer you to Whistler’s Cottage in Senga Bay to catch the Blue Zebra boat to their private island. You will stay here for the last 2 nights of your tour. Blue Zebra Island Lodge is nestled on Nankoma Island, an unspoiled paradise under the protection of Lake Malawi National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Wake up to the sounds of nature and Lake Malawi with the sound of chirping birds.

The lodge has a range of activity options to suit individuals, couples, families and friends. Take a gentle walk around the island and don’t forget your binoculars. Visit in the Green season and you could spot the annually nesting African pitta! Kayak around the island, snorkel, take a dip in the stunning infinity pool or just sit on your private veranda to relax.

Day 12: Lilongwe International Airport

Today, you will wave goodbye to Malawi. You will be transferred by boat back to the mainland where your guide will be waiting to transfer you to Lilongwe Kamuzu International Airport.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON A MALAWI  SAFARI
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All visitors to Malawi must have a valid passport with at least 4 consecutive blanks pages.  Any applicable visa and/or relevant documentation are the responsibility of the traveller.  For further information on Visa requirements visitors are advised to contact their nearest Malawi Embassy or Consulate.

TIME: GMT +3
 
VOLTAGE: 220 Volts/AC50Hz. Sockets are UK style, 3 pin square plugs. Power is from the government in the city/major towns and generator with inverter back up in the Safari Lodges and Camps.
 
CURRENCY: Foreign currency must be changed at the Bank, Bureau de Change, and Hotel/Safari lodge/Camp/Resort.   Major Credit Cards, Master card, Visa, American Express, are usually accepted throughout the country.  Where credit cards are accepted, the payment will normally be recorded in US$ regardless of the card’s default currency.
 
CLOTHING: Dress is mainly informal and should be comfortable as well as practical. Something warm should be brought along for early morning and evenings. Safari clothes are available from hotels/lodges/camps.
 
BAGGAGE: Where possible, travel light. Baggage space on safari is limited to medium suitcase or soft bag per person plus reasonable amount of hand luggage. There is 15 Kilogram per person limit on all flights to the wildlife sanctuaries. Excess luggage must be stored in your arrival hotel.
 
WATER: You will find many different of opinion of what is safe and what is not. We recommend for peace of mind, to drink local Bottled Mineral water. It is important to drink plenty of water especially during the hotter months. We would recommend that guests drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day to limit the effects of dehydration.
 
HEALTH; East Africa is a safe and secure destination; however, it is a good idea to take a few precautions.  Kindly consult your GP or local doctor at least 6 weeks before you travel, with regards: Malaria prophylactics. East Africa is a known malaria area and preventive measures are essential. You are advised to take one of the recommended anti-malarial drugs.  Be sure to wear long sleeved shorts and trousers after sunset and spray the exposed parts of your body with a mosquito repellent spray Remember to protect yourself from direct sun rays with sunscreen cream or safari hat.
 
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: For those guests with specific dietary requirement, please ensure we are notified prior to travel
 
GRATUITIES: As a guideline and dependent on how happy you are, we would suggest the following: The General Hotel/Lodge/Camp Staff – Approximately U$ 10.00 per person per day Driver Guides – Approximately US$ 15.00 to US$ 20.00 per person per day.
 
PHOTOGRAPHY: Please be careful when photographing public buildings, airports, bridges, the national flag and people in uniform.  Ensure that you have sought permission before photographing local people and their villages.  If in doubt, please check with your guide.
