6 Days Mozambique Tropical Island Tour

Day 1: Bilene

We will meet you at a pre-arranged pick up point in Maputo. We’ll then make our way to the beautiful Bilene, a small town surrounded by inland lakes. We’ll check in at our accommodation where you can settle in. Your accommodation will be a comfortable chalet. In the evening, we will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant. Your overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 2: Activities in Bilene

We’ll start the day with an early morning swim in the clear waters of the inland lake. After our refreshing swim, we’ll enjoy a scrumptious breakfast, after which you can relax on the beach at our campsite. Your guide will organize a boat trip across the inland lake to the beaches of the Indian Ocean. Afterwards, your local guide will then take you for a walk along the beach to one of the spots where you might be lucky enough to observe the hawksbill and green turtles which make the Bilene area their home.

The rest of the day can be spent familiarizing yourself with the local fisherman and maybe even going prawning with them. This is an excellent time to immerse yourself in their culture and to get to know how the locals live. There is a local market where you can find an assortment of curios, and taking a walk around town is a must. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a fish barbecue. Your overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 3: Tofo Beach

After breakfast, we will leave Bilene and drive to Tofo Beach where we will spend the next 2 days. These relaxing days are spent swimming in the tropical Indian Ocean, sun bathing, playing beach, playing beach volleyball and enjoying sun downers at local the beach bar. The small town of Tofo also has its own small curio, food market, one or two restaurants where they serve great seafood and other local dishes typical of Mozambique.

Your guide can organize an optional Ocean safari (at your own cost). If you would like to learn how to surf, you will have the opportunity to take some classes. During these days, there could also be an opportunity to check out dive spots at Barra Reef.

Day 4: Activities Tofo

After waking up to the sounds of the Indian Ocean, we will enjoy a hearty tropical breakfast before travelling north to the town of Inhambane, with one of the best curio markets in Mozambique. After a visit to the market, we will head towards Barra Beach. The warm tropical waters of Barra attract many species of fish and other sea dwelling creatures such as green and leather-back turtles, manta rays and the whale shark, the majestic giant of the sea. After a day of exploring, we will return to Tofo for dinner and your overnight stay.

Day 5: Xai Xai (Shai Shai)

After breakfast, we will make our way to Xai Xai (pronounced shai shai). This busting town is situated alongside the Limpopo River and is the capital of the Gaza Province. This popular holiday town has most amenities including markets, shops, restaurants, bars, petrol stations banks and a post office. The beach is a mere 15 minutes drive from the town. Xai Xai is home to a beautiful reef that runs parallel to the beach.

Here you’ll expericne great snorkelling and diving. Popular beaches in this area include Chongoene and Zongoene. Attractions include the fascinating Wenela Tidal Pool and a number of fresh water lakes within a 30 minute drive are ideal for water sports. Sunset cruises can also be enjoyed on the Limpopo River. Dinner and your overnight stay are at the lodge.

Day 6: Return to Maputo

This is the last day of your Mozambique tropical island safari. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll make our way back to Maputo. Drop off by arrangement.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON A MOZAMBIQUE SAFARI
 
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: All visitors to Mozambique must have a valid passport with at least 4 consecutive blanks pages.  Any applicable visa and/or relevant documentation are the responsibility of the traveller.  For further information on Visa requirements visitors are advised to contact their nearest Mozambique Embassy or Consulate.

TIME: GMT +3
 
VOLTAGE: 220 Volts/AC50Hz. Sockets are UK style, 3 pin square plugs. Power is from the government in the city/major towns and generator with inverter back up in the Safari Lodges and Camps.
 
CURRENCY: Foreign currency must be changed at the Bank, Bureau de Change, and Hotel/Safari lodge/Camp/Resort.   Major Credit Cards, Master card, Visa, American Express, are usually accepted throughout the country.  Where credit cards are accepted, the payment will normally be recorded in US$ regardless of the card’s default currency.
 
CLOTHING: Dress is mainly informal and should be comfortable as well as practical. Something warm should be brought along for early morning and evenings. Safari clothes are available from hotels/lodges/camps.
 
BAGGAGE: Where possible, travel light. Baggage space on safari is limited to medium suitcase or soft bag per person plus reasonable amount of hand luggage. There is 15 Kilogram per person limit on all flights to the wildlife sanctuaries. Excess luggage must be stored in your arrival hotel.
 
WATER: You will find many different of opinion of what is safe and what is not. We recommend for peace of mind, to drink local Bottled Mineral water. It is important to drink plenty of water especially during the hotter months. We would recommend that guests drink at least 2 to 3 liters of water per day to limit the effects of dehydration.
 
HEALTH; East Africa is a safe and secure destination; however, it is a good idea to take a few precautions.  Kindly consult your GP or local doctor at least 6 weeks before you travel, with regards: Malaria prophylactics. East Africa is a known malaria area and preventive measures are essential. You are advised to take one of the recommended anti-malarial drugs.  Be sure to wear long sleeved shorts and trousers after sunset and spray the exposed parts of your body with a mosquito repellent spray Remember to protect yourself from direct sun rays with sunscreen cream or safari hat.
 
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS: For those guests with specific dietary requirement, please ensure we are notified prior to travel
 
GRATUITIES: As a guideline and dependent on how happy you are, we would suggest the following: The General Hotel/Lodge/Camp Staff – Approximately U$ 10.00 per person per day Driver Guides – Approximately US$ 15.00 to US$ 20.00 per person per day.
 
PHOTOGRAPHY: Please be careful when photographing public buildings, airports, bridges, the national flag and people in uniform.  Ensure that you have sought permission before photographing local people and their villages.  If in doubt, please check with your guide.
