Nkuringo Gorilla Groups and Permits: Nkuringo was opened for gorilla tracking in 2004, the sector lies at a high altitude about 6800 feet on the park’s southwestern border north of Kisoro town. Nkuringo-Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is 480 km about 10 hours drive from Kampala via Mbarara-Kabale Road, another route from Kampala via Fort Portal to Nkuringo-Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is 634 km approximately 12 hours drive.

The Nkuringo gorilla family was named after their founding alpha silver back called Nkuringo whose name translates as “Round Hill”. The family’s successful habituation ended in 2004 and Nkuringo died four years later. He was survived by two sons called Rafiki (meaning friend in Swahili) and Safari. Safari took leadership of the family and has been able to firmly hold all its members together through times of happiness and seasons of trial. The family joyfully embraced healthy baby twins just seven months into safari reign and they were named Katungi and Muhoozi. Sadly, Katungi passed on without seeing his second birthday. Currently the family has 19 members including 2 silverbacks.
Introduction of Christmas gorilla group
Christmas gorilla group is the new group in Nkuringo located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. The group consists of 6 members, headed by 1 silverback called Christmas, 1 black back, 3 females and one baby. The introduction of this group has increased the number of gorilla permits available for gorilla trekking at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Nkuringo gorilla tracking permits cost USD 600 and you will be able to spend only 1 hour with the mountain gorillas. Nkuringo sector at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has 3 habituated gorilla families active for gorilla tracking, at Nkuringo 24 gorilla permits are accessible daily, a total of 24 people can trek mountain gorillas daily. These permits are purchased at the Uganda Wildlife Authority, book with Gorilla Tracking Africa.
